Laptops are the hardest electronics purchase to research, because the same model name can hide a dozen configurations, and the spec sheet buries the things you'll actually notice — screen quality, keyboard feel, battery life — under a wall of processor branding. The trick is to figure out what you actually do with a computer, then match specs to that, and ignore everything aimed at a buyer you aren't.
Start with what you actually do
Be honest here, because it changes everything downstream:
- Browsing, email, documents, streaming. This describes most people, and most people overbuy. Almost any modern laptop handles this; your money is better spent on screen, build, and battery than on processing power.
- Photo and video work, heavy multitasking, development. You'll feel the difference from more RAM, faster storage, and a better processor.
- Gaming or 3D work. You need a discrete GPU, and you'll trade away battery life and portability to get it. Different machine, different guide priorities.
The specs that actually matter
RAM: the quiet ceiling
RAM determines how much your machine can juggle before it starts to crawl, and on many thin laptops it's soldered to the board — you can never upgrade it. As of mid-2026, 16GB is the sensible floor for a machine you plan to keep for years. 8GB configurations still exist at the bottom of the market and still get cramped with a browser full of tabs. If a configuration decision will haunt you in year three, it's this one. When in doubt, buy the RAM, skip the processor upgrade.
Screen: what you stare at all day
You will look at this panel for thousands of hours, and it's the spec manufacturers cut first to hit a price. Things worth caring about:
- Resolution and sharpness. 1080p-class is fine at 13–14 inches; larger screens benefit from more pixels.
- Brightness. Dim panels (common in the budget tier) are miserable near a window. Around 300 nits is a reasonable floor; more is better if you work in bright rooms.
- Panel quality. IPS or OLED, not the washed-out TN panels that still lurk in the cheapest machines. OLED laptops offer gorgeous contrast, with some battery cost.
- Aspect ratio. Taller 16:10 or 3:2 screens show more of a document or web page than 16:9. Once you've used one, going back is annoying.
Battery life (real, not claimed)
Manufacturer battery claims are generated under laboratory conditions involving dim screens and idle machines; treat them as fiction with a grain of truth. The variables that actually predict good battery life are battery capacity (watt-hours), an efficient processor, and screen resolution — very-high-resolution panels drain faster. Independent reviews with standardized battery tests are worth more than any number on the box. As a rule, thin machines with efficiency-focused chips now genuinely last a full workday; gaming laptops still don't, and no marketing will change that.
The processor, calibrated to your needs
Processor branding is deliberately confusing — overlapping tiers, generations, and suffixes across multiple vendors. Cut through it with two questions. First, is the chip a current or last-generation part? A modern mid-tier chip beats an aged flagship for most work, and efficiency (hence battery life) improves each generation. Second, do you actually need the top tier? For the browsing-and-documents crowd, the answer is almost always no; mid-tier chips have been comfortably fast for years. Pay for the top tier only if you compile, render, or export for a living.
Keyboard, trackpad, ports, build
None of these appear meaningfully on spec sheets, and all of them shape daily life with the machine. A mushy keyboard or jittery trackpad will annoy you every single day. Check the port selection against what you own — dongles are a tax on forgetfulness — and if you can type on a machine in a store before buying it online, do.
What you can safely ignore
- "AI PC" branding. As of mid-2026, nearly every new laptop ships with a neural processing unit and a sticker announcing it. It enables some on-device features, but it should not drive your purchase or justify a premium by itself.
- Storage beyond your needs. 512GB is plenty for most people. Paying a large premium for 2TB you'll never fill is a classic upsell; cloud storage and external drives are cheap.
- Thinness one-upmanship. Past a certain point, thinner just means fewer ports, more heat throttling, and less battery. You will not notice two fewer millimeters in a bag.
- Touchscreens on traditional clamshells. If you want a tablet-style device, buy a convertible on purpose. On a normal laptop, a touchscreen mostly adds glare, cost, and battery drain.
What your money typically buys, as of mid-2026
- Under $500 typically buys compromise: 8GB RAM, dim screens, slow storage, plasticky builds. Workable for light use or a student on a strict budget, but check the RAM before anything else.
- $500–900 typically buys a competent all-rounder — 16GB RAM, a decent IPS screen, all-day-ish battery. Most people should shop here and pick the configuration carefully.
- $900–1,500 typically buys genuinely nice machines: better screens (often OLED), aluminum builds, strong battery life, current-generation chips. The sweet spot for anyone who lives on their laptop.
- $1,500 and up typically buys flagship ultrabooks, workstations, and serious gaming hardware. Worth it if your work demands it; diminishing returns if it doesn't.

- 15–16 inches suits people whose laptop mostly lives on a desk but occasionally travels. More screen, usually more ports, sometimes a number pad.
- 17-plus inches is a desktop replacement. Buy it knowing you'll rarely move it.
Also consider weight directly — two machines with the same screen size can differ by a pound or more — and check the power adapter's size if you'll carry it daily.
When to buy
Laptop deals cluster around back-to-school season in late summer, Black Friday through the December holidays, and the weeks when a new chip generation arrives and retailers clear outgoing models. That last window is quietly the best value in the category: a last-generation machine at a steep cut is usually a better buy than a current-generation machine at full price, because year-over-year changes are typically incremental.
