How we calculate price per terabyte
Price per terabyte ($/TB) is the single fairest way to compare storage across capacities and drive types. For every drive we take its lowest current price from the retailers we track and divide by its usable capacity in terabytes, so a 4 TB drive at $80 ($20/TB) ranks ahead of a 1 TB drive at $30 ($30/TB) even though the smaller drive costs less up front.
We rank each storage class separately — internal and external hard drives, portable drives, SATA SSDs and NVMe SSDs — because their $/TB floors differ by an order of magnitude, and mixing them would bury a good SSD deal under bulk spinning disks. Prices refresh automatically from live retailer listings, and the trend charts show the median $/TB for each class over time so you can tell a genuine sale from the usual baseline. Larger drives almost always win on $/TB, so buy the biggest capacity that fits your budget and enclosure.
