RAM is the most expensive part of a PC build right now, and a year ago it was an afterthought. A 32GB DDR5 kit that sold for around $100 in mid-2025 now lists between $380 and $560. DDR4 — older, slower, supposedly on its way out — rose even faster. This article covers what happened, who is actually consuming all this memory, what analysts expect through 2027, and what that means if you need RAM before then.

The demand shock: AI bought the memory industry's output

The short version: AI datacenters started buying memory faster than anyone can make it.

Every AI accelerator ships with high-bandwidth memory (HBM) stacked next to the GPU, and each generation carries more of it. Current parts carry 192–288GB per accelerator; NVIDIA's Rubin Ultra platform is expected to reach 384GB of HBM per GPU in 2027. Behind every rack of accelerators sits conventional server memory too — terabytes of DDR5 per node.

The single largest shock came in October 2025, when OpenAI signed letters of intent with Samsung and SK Hynix for up to roughly 900,000 DRAM wafers per month — about 40% of global DRAM output — for its Stargate datacenter program. Memory makers, burned by the 2023 oversupply crash, had kept capacity growth modest. Demand did not stay modest.

The producers' earnings show the scale of it. Micron reported record quarterly revenue of $41.5 billion at an 84.9% gross margin in June 2026 — its fifth straight record quarter. SK Hynix posted a 76% operating margin in Q2 2026. Samsung's semiconductor division drove the most profitable quarter any tech company has ever reported. Margins like that are what a shortage looks like from the selling side.

What that did to prices — and who is using the memory

TrendForce's contract-price data tells the story quarter by quarter. Conventional DRAM contract prices rose 93–98% in Q1 2026 alone — PC DRAM contracts rose 105–110%, a record — then another 58–63% in Q2. At retail, the German tracker 3DCenter puts DDR5 kit prices at nearly five times their July 2025 level. Tom's Hardware measured 128GB DDR5 kits at $3,399 — up to ten times the lowest prices they had ever tracked. HP told investors that memory now makes up about 35% of a PC's bill of materials, up from roughly 15–18% a quarter earlier.

So where do the bits actually go? Here is the best estimate we can assemble from TrendForce and industry segment data:

Two things stand out. First, your desktop is a small customer: PCs take roughly a tenth of global DRAM bits, while servers and datacenters take about four in ten — servers passed phones as the biggest DRAM segment back in 2023 and have grown since. Desktop graphics cards (GDDR memory) are smaller still, a few percent.

Second, the HBM slice is deceptively thin. AI and server GPUs account for only about 9% of DRAM bits in 2026 — but HBM's stacked design burns three to four times the wafers per bit of ordinary DRAM, so that slice consumes about 22% of the industry's wafer capacity, heading for 30% in 2027. Every wafer that becomes HBM is a wafer that doesn't become the DDR5 in your shopping cart. That, more than anything, is why gaming RAM tripled: desktop buyers aren't competing with each other, they're competing with datacenters for wafer starts.

Where demand goes in 2027

No major analyst expects relief in 2027. TrendForce projects the total memory market to peak at $842.7 billion in 2027, up another 53%, and estimates DRAM supply will run 1–2% short of demand in 2026, with the gap widening in 2027. HBM contract prices — locked in annual deals rather than quarterly ones — are expected to catch up sharply in 2027 as HBM4 ramps and per-GPU memory keeps climbing.

For PC buyers the mechanics stay the same: server DRAM and HBM get first claim on wafers, and consumer DIMMs get what's left. Contract-price growth is decelerating — from 93–98% in Q1 2026 to 13–18% for server DRAM in Q3 — and in September 2026 DDR4 spot prices fell about 5%, their first decline in nearly a year. That reads as the fever breaking — prices climbing more slowly, then plateauing at a high level — not as prices returning to 2024.

The manufacturers' own guesses about when supply catches up: Micron's CEO says tight through 2027 with gradual improvement by 2028; Samsung says the shortage runs through 2028; SK Hynix has floated 2030.

The fabs being built to catch up

The supply answer is under construction, but DRAM fabs take years:

  • SK Hynix opened its M15X fab in Cheongju in late 2026, ramping toward 80,000 wafers per month in 2027, and pulled the first Yongin megafab forward to February 2027. The Yongin cluster is planned to roughly double the company's DRAM capacity by 2030.
  • Samsung is accelerating its Pyeongtaek P4 expansion and preparing P5 for 2027 investment, part of a reported ~$83 billion AI-memory buildout.
  • Micron is spending about $200 billion on U.S. capacity: its first Boise, Idaho fab produces wafers in the second half of 2027, with the New York megafab site following around 2028 and beyond.
  • CXMT, China's DRAM champion, is expanding toward 350,000 wafers per month by the end of 2026 — but most of that output serves China's domestic market, so it does little for Western retail prices near-term.

The catch is the lag. A fab that opens in 2027 spends quarters ramping yields before its wafers show up as kits on shelves — TrendForce doesn't expect meaningful supply contribution until 2028. New capacity is real, and it is how every previous memory shortage ended. It just doesn't help you this year.

So when should you buy — and DDR4 or DDR5?

If you need RAM now, buy on the dips and don't wait for a crash. Nobody credible forecasts cheap RAM in the next 12 months. In this market, good deals are brief: 32GB DDR5 kits that usually sit near $430–560 have dipped to $389–400 in September 2026, and those dips sell out. Set a price alert on a kit you want and act when it fires. If you can genuinely wait years, 2028 is when new fabs should start mattering.

DDR5 is the right buy for any new build. AM5 and Intel's current platforms are DDR5-only, the platform has an upgrade path, and — remarkably — DDR5 is now the cheaper technology at the chip level: 16Gb DDR4 spot chips overtook equivalent DDR5 in August 2025 and have since risen over 2,000% in a year. Retail DDR4 kits still sell below DDR5 kits (roughly $250 for 32GB of DDR4-3200 versus $380+ for DDR5), but the gap that once made DDR4 the budget pick has mostly closed.

DDR4 only makes sense as a top-up for a system you already own — an AM4 or LGA1700 board you're keeping. Even then, check used listings: with every major manufacturer winding DDR4 down (Micron issued end-of-life notices in 2025, Samsung and SK Hynix extended production only because the spike made it profitable), new DDR4 supply shrinks from here. Putting $250 of dead-end memory into an old board is a hard sell against saving it toward a DDR5 platform. One upside: used DDR4 sticks in your drawer have real resale value right now — an odd first for old RAM.

Has AI changed computing for good? The demand side, probably yes: memory has gone from a commodity you barely thought about to the component AI companies sign multi-year deals over, and per-chip memory keeps growing every accelerator generation. The prices, probably not forever: this is still a cyclical industry, hundreds of billions of dollars of new capacity are under construction, and every shortage in DRAM's history has eventually turned into a glut. The likely landing spot is somewhere between the old world and this one — supply catches up in 2028, prices come off their peak, but with datacenters holding first claim on wafers, the $90 32GB kit of 2025 may be the low-water mark we don't see again.
