A graphics card is supposed to be cheap six years after launch. NVIDIA's RTX 30-series cards arrived in 2020 and 2021, have been superseded by two newer generations, and mostly went out of production years ago. By the normal rules of PC hardware they should be bargain-bin parts by now. Instead, the median asking price for an RTX 3090 across the live listings we track is $1,750 — above the card's $1,499 launch price — and even the humble RTX 3060 typically lists above its 2021 MSRP. This article covers how that happened: the crypto years, the long slide that followed, and the AI-driven turn that ended it.

2020–2022: launched into a shortage

The RTX 30 series ("Ampere") launched in September 2020 with the $699 RTX 3080 and $1,499 RTX 3090, followed by the $499 RTX 3070 that October, the $399 RTX 3060 Ti in December, and the $329 RTX 3060 in February 2021. The reviews were strong and the prices, on paper, were aggressive — the 3080 roughly matched the previous generation's $1,199 flagship for $500 less.

Almost nobody paid those prices. The cards launched into a pandemic that had broken supply chains and put everyone at home in front of a PC, and into a crypto bull run in which a mid-range GeForce card could pay for itself mining Ethereum. Bots cleared every restock, and through 2021 street prices ran two to three times MSRP; NVIDIA even added a "Lite Hash Rate" mining limiter in mid-2021 in an attempt to get cards to gamers instead of mining farms. At the peak in early 2022, a $699 RTX 3080 routinely sold used for more than $1,500.

Then it ended abruptly. In September 2022, Ethereum switched to proof-of-stake — the "Merge" — and GPU mining stopped being profitable overnight. Miners dumped hundreds of thousands of cards onto the used market just as the RTX 40 series launched. Used Ampere prices fell for the next two and a half years: by 2024–2025 an RTX 3080 could be had in the mid-$400s, a 3070 for under $300, and an RTX 3090 for $600–800. Late in 2025, that slide stopped.

What the market looks like now

Here is where the five main models sit today on the listings PriceSniff tracks — mostly used and refurbished cards on marketplace listings — against what they cost at launch:

Three things stand out. The mid-range cards — 3060 Ti, 3070, 3080 — still sell below their launch prices, but at 60–75% of MSRP they have retained far more value than five-to-six-year-old GPUs normally do. The RTX 3060 asks more than its launch price. And the RTX 3090 asks more than launch too — sellers are listing a September 2020 flagship at a premium to its original $1,499. Asking prices overstate what cards actually change hands for, and patient buyers still find working 3090s in the $600–800 range from reliable sellers — but a spread that wide between ask and typical sale is itself a sign of a market under demand pressure. The same pattern holds at the top of the stack: the three RTX 3090 Ti listings we track all ask above $2,100, against a $1,999 launch price.

The one Ampere card still in retail production tells the same story from the other end: the RTX 3050 6GB launched in early 2024 at $169–179, and listings we track start at $177, with most asking between $200 and $300.

When prices turned, and why

The turn came in late 2025, and the cause is the same one behind this year's RAM price spike: AI datacenters started consuming most of the memory industry's output. AI accelerators use high-bandwidth memory that takes three to four times the wafer capacity per bit of ordinary DRAM, and memory makers shifted production toward it. Conventional DRAM contract prices rose 93–98% in the first quarter of 2026 alone, and the GDDR graphics memory on every video card got dragged along.

That hit new graphics cards directly — memory is a big slice of a GPU's bill of materials. NVIDIA and AMD raised partner-card prices repeatedly through 2026, and Tom's Hardware's price tracking shows current-generation cards selling far above their launch MSRPs; a new RTX 5090 lists around $3,800 — nearly double its $1,999 launch price. When new cards get more expensive, used cards follow: every buyer priced out of an RTX 5060 becomes a bidder on a used 3060 Ti.

The second force is specific to the RTX 3090: it has 24GB of VRAM, and VRAM is what running AI models at home actually requires. A used 3090 is widely regarded as the best-value GPU for local AI in 2026 — two of them cost less than one used RTX 4090 or 5090, and no affordable current card matches its memory. A card that was a gaming flagship in 2020 now competes in a different market, one with much deeper pockets. That is why the 3090 has held its value dramatically better than the 3080, which is nearly as fast in games but has 10GB of memory.

Who buys a six-year-old GPU in 2026?

More people than you might expect — we currently track 168 live RTX 30-series listings, and they turn over steadily. Three groups drive it: 1080p gamers, for whom a $300 RTX 3060 Ti or 3070 still runs current games well and undercuts anything new with comparable performance; local-AI builders, who want the 3090's 24GB and treat everything else as irrelevant; and upgraders priced out of the mid-range by this year's MSRP hikes on new cards. The 3060 in particular remains one of the most common cards in Steam's hardware survey years after it stopped being current.

Will prices come back down?

Not soon, on the evidence. No major analyst expects memory supply to loosen before late 2027 — Micron's CEO points to gradual improvement by 2028, Samsung says the shortage runs through 2028, and SK Hynix has floated 2030. Until memory prices stop climbing, new-card prices hold, and used Ampere prices hold with them.

The strangest sign of relief is NVIDIA itself: according to a leak reported by Tom's Hardware, the company has considered putting the RTX 3060 back into production in 2026 — a two-generation-old card revived because its GDDR6 memory is cheaper and more available than the GDDR7 in current cards. Nothing is confirmed, but fresh Ampere supply at MSRP would put a ceiling on used prices at the low end.

Structurally, three things would actually fix this market: new DRAM fabs reaching volume (the plants under construction start producing in 2027, with shelf impact around 2028), datacenter memory demand cooling off, or NVIDIA shipping affordable new cards with enough VRAM that a 2020 flagship stops being the best deal in local AI. None of them is on the calendar for the next year.

Practical advice follows from that. If you need a card now, the 3060 Ti and 3070 at around $300 are the value in the lineup — below launch price for hardware that still performs. Set a price alert rather than watching listings by hand; good deals go fast. And unless you specifically need 24GB of VRAM today, be patient with the 3090: the gap between asking prices and real sale prices means the patient buyer usually wins.
