A monitor is the rare piece of electronics you might use eight hours a day for eight years, which makes it strange how often it's an afterthought bought to match a budget's leftovers. It's also a market thick with jargon — panel acronyms, response-time claims, HDR badges of wildly varying honesty. The underlying decisions are simpler than the spec sheets suggest, and they start with what you do in front of the thing.
The specs that actually matter
Size and resolution, together
These two only make sense as a pair, because together they determine pixel density — how sharp text looks, which is what most people actually notice.
- 24 inches at 1080p is the old default. Fine, sharp enough, cheap.
- 27 inches at 1440p (QHD) is the mainstream sweet spot as of mid-2026: noticeably more workspace, crisp text, and modest demands on a gaming PC.

Ergonomics and connectivity
A stand that adjusts for height, tilt, and rotation is worth real money — your neck agrees — and cheap monitors often ship with a wobbly tilt-only stand to hit a price. Check for VESA mount holes so you can add an arm later. On ports: laptop users should look hard at USB-C monitors that deliver video, power, and USB through a single cable, because a monitor that doubles as a dock declutters a desk more than any other purchase.
HDR, honestly
Most monitors that advertise HDR cannot meaningfully display it — the badge requires little more than accepting the signal.
