First, which "8GB" are we talking about?
The question hides two different questions. An 8GB stick is a module; most desktops run two or four of them. A system with 8GB total — one stick, or a thin-and-light laptop with 8GB soldered down — is a different animal entirely.
That distinction does most of the work in this article. A pair of 8GB sticks gives you 16GB in dual-channel — which is still, by a comfortable margin, the most common gaming configuration in the world. A single 8GB stick gives you half the memory and half the memory bandwidth, since one module means single-channel operation — a configuration that can cost an integrated GPU 25–30% of its performance and drags on discrete-GPU systems too. Same product, very different outcomes depending on how many you buy.
How popular is 8GB in 2026?
Going by Valve's August 2026 Steam Hardware Survey, systems with 8GB of total RAM are down to 7.46% of surveyed gaming PCs — a long fall from 2019, when 8GB was the most common tier on the platform, and still shrinking by about half a point per month.
But the 8GB module is doing far better than the 8GB system. The most common configuration on Steam is 16GB at 41.20% — and the cheapest, most common way to reach 16GB has always been two 8GB sticks. Add the pairs hiding inside that 41% to the genuine 8GB-total systems and the humble 8GB module remains one of the highest-volume DRAM products in the consumer market.
And in laptops, 8GB is staging a comeback nobody asked for. With DDR5 kit prices up as much as 485% year over year, manufacturers are quietly re-introducing 8GB configurations to hold price points: Lenovo's 2026 IdeaPad lineup pairs current Ryzen AI processors with 8GB of soldered LPDDR5X, and analysts are warning that mid-range laptops may broadly slide back to 8GB through 2026 as memory costs eat the bill of materials.
Rising or falling? Both — and the trend just bent
For most of the decade the story was one-directional: 8GB fading, 16GB standard, 32GB next in line. Through 2025 it looked finished — between March and August 2025, 32GB climbed from 32.85% to 35.42% of Steam users while 16GB slipped toward it, and 32GB was widely projected to take the crown by early 2026.

By March 2026, 16GB was back on top at 40.97%, and it has held the lead since — 41.20% versus 37.45% for 32GB in August. The migration to 32GB didn't reverse; it slowed to a crawl, because the upgrade that cost $90 in mid-2025 costs $380–560 today. Every month the crunch continues is another month the 16GB build — and the 8GB sticks inside it — stays the default.
So the honest trend line: 8GB-total systems keep declining, but slower, as the cheap path off 8GB gets more expensive; 8GB sticks got a reprieve at both ends, holding the 16GB desktop mainstream in place and creeping back into budget laptops.
When 8GB sticks are the right call for a gaming desktop
As a pair on DDR4 — yes, emphatically. If you're gaming on an AM4 or LGA1700 board, 8GB DDR4 sticks are the last genuinely cheap memory in the market. As a pair on DDR5 — check the math first, because it has flipped. This is the trap the shortage created. Low-capacity modules carry fixed costs that don't shrink with the gigabytes, and the crunch has stretched that premium to absurdity. As of mid-September, the kits we track price a 2×8GB DDR5 kit around $249.99 — while the best-value 32GB (2×16GB) kit sits at $229.00. Read that again: on DDR5, sixteen gigabytes via 8GB sticks currently costs more than thirty-two gigabytes via 16GB sticks. Single 8GB DDR5 modules start near $120, roughly $15/GB against about $7/GB for the best 32GB kits. Unless a specific sale says otherwise, 8GB DDR5 sticks are the wrong buy at almost any budget — the same money simply buys more memory on bigger modules.

As a single stick — no. One 8GB module means 8GB total and single-channel bandwidth. If $60 is truly the ceiling, a DDR4 pair is the answer; a lone stick with plans to "add one later" costs you dual-channel performance the whole time you wait, and matched kits avoid the compatibility roulette of mixing modules a year apart.
Is 16GB itself still enough to game on? For most people, still yes. It matches the single most common configuration on Steam, meets the recommended spec of the large majority of 2026 releases, and with a Windows 11 install idling at 3–4GB, it leaves a comfortable 12GB+ for the game. The genuine 32GB cases — heavily modded titles, streaming with OBS plus a browser full of tabs, flight sims — are real but minority. In a sane market we'd tell new builders to go straight to 32GB for the headroom; at today's prices, 16GB now and a top-up when prices eventually relent is a defensible plan, especially on a four-slot board where today's 2×8GB can become 32GB later without discarding anything.
Laptops are a different story
Everything above assumed slots and second sticks. Laptops mostly deny you both, and that changes the verdict.
A gaming laptop — or any laptop you intend to game on — should not be bought with 8GB in 2026. The OS overhead that leaves a 16GB desktop comfortable leaves an 8GB laptop with 4–5GB free for a game; testing shows modern titles can run on 8GB with upscaling and tuned settings, but with stutter in the 1% lows exactly when memory spills over — and on a laptop with soldered LPDDR5X there is no second slot to fix it later. Even Microsoft draws the line above 8GB now: Copilot+ PCs require 16GB minimum. The 8GB laptops flooding back into the market at $400–500 are fine for browsing and schoolwork — as gaming machines they're where budgets go to stutter. If a laptop has two SO-DIMM slots, the desktop logic returns: 2×8GB is a fine floor. If the memory is soldered, buy the 16GB configuration or walk away.
The verdict
8GB is simultaneously the most popular capacity in PC gaming and an obsolete one — it just depends which 8GB you mean. As half of a 16GB pair, the 8GB stick powers more Steam gaming PCs than any other configuration, and the memory price crisis has extended that reign well past its expected end. As a total system capacity, it's a fading floor that the same crisis is cynically re-introducing at the bottom of the laptop market.
For a gaming desktop in 2026: two 8GB DDR4 sticks remain the budget move of the year; two 8GB DDR5 sticks currently cost more than a 32GB kit and deserve a hard pass; one 8GB stick of anything was never the move. For a gaming laptop: 16GB or slots — accept no substitute.
